How Long Do AC Units Last?

Air conditioning units last about 15 years on average. That said, the different kinds of air conditioning systems can have dramatically different lifespans. A central air conditioner can keep you cool for 20 to 25 years while a portable AC might only last 5 to 10. Window ACs typically survive for 10 to 20 years and mini split systems will cool your home for 15 to 20 years on average.

Should I Repair or Replace My Air Conditioner?

The age of your AC is always the first thing to consider when deciding if you should repair or replace your air conditioner. If your AC is even approaching the average lifespan for that kind of unit, it’s probably time to replace it.

For central air and mini split systems, you should still have an HVAC technician diagnose any issues. It’s possible that an inexpensive repair could breathe a few more years of life into these systems, even with older units. Smaller portable and window AC units cost so little that even the labor costs for a repair might wind up costing more than a new unit.

It’s also important to think about the energy efficiency of your existing system when deciding if you should repair or replace your AC. Compare the seasonal energy efficiency ratio (SEER) of your air conditioner with modern models. If you have an older AC, the efficiency of a newer unit will likely lower your energy bills by hundreds of dollars a year. Thus, it might make sense to replace your existing unit even if it’s still keeping you cool.

How Much Does It Cost to Replace an Air Conditioner?

Like their lifespans, the average costs to replace an air conditioner varies wildly. You can pick up a new portable or window unit for a couple hundreds dollars and skip installation costs altogether. More complex mini split and central air systems cost a good deal more.

Mini split system installations can run anywhere from $2,000 to $10,000 or more, depending on the size of your home and the number of zones you want. The outdoor units themselves range from $1,000 to $6,000 and each indoor unit will cost you between $400 and $2,000. While these prices might seem high, remember that mini split systems provide heat in addition to air conditioning

Central air conditioner installations are similarly expensive. Smaller models run a little over $1,000, but with ductwork and labor the total cost is closer to $3,000. For larger homes, the total cost to replace a central air unit is closer to $7,500. The most efficient systems for large homes will set you back $10,000 or more. But remember, the energy costs of modern ACs are so low that they’ll likely save you thousands of dollars over the life of a new unit.
